Break Time!

I'm at the data center again tonight, but hopefully for only a brief time.

One of the servers we were building has mysteriously only reported 28 GB of RAM when it should be reporting 32 GB. I've reseated the components: the boot diags show 32 GB but I'm running extended diagnostics to see if perhaps there's a fault detected by the ILOM or OS, cauzing the memory to be made unavailable. I'll check back in an hour or so.

The bulk of the convention registration documents have been passed to Staples for photocopying, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kent4str making a quick dash to deliver them. I've caught up on some registration paperwork and processing: there's a flurry of registration transfers in progress.

I'm seeing something the past three convention committees warned me would happen: a flurry of I-know-its-past-the-tours-deadline-but-could-you-squeeze-me-in-anyway requests, the gee-why-can't-I-get-the-convention-hotel-room-rate-now-that-the-room-block-has-expired and the am-I-registered-'cause-I-can't-remember-if-I-preregistered-and-can't-find-any-confirmation-email. I think the role of registrar should be split into a database manager and a telephone operator to deal with both the real work and the customer service work.

Life will get better come Sunday when many folks will be on their way to DC and can then kvetch in person rather than via email or telephone. My time will then be swallowed up by people who slept in, missed their pre-convention tours and therefore want help getting to the site or a full refund. Prior convention committees also reminded me to always smile when I say no so they understand I feel their pain.

We got word today that the audio folks will be bringing a small generator which can be used for the fun badge tour. This is a huge relief: we were going to rent one from Home Depot nearby but it was yet another task to be either handled directly or delegated out. Now the issue is entirely off our to-do list. I need more news tidbits like that.

In a less bitchy vein --dear god, am I tired-- my bigger worry Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be maintaining Internet contact with the office. My Crackberry will keep me abreast of emails but if there's a serious issue, I'll need to either pay major dollars for Internet access for my laptop or come up with some creative means of getting the tasks done. At least the workload presented by the caller school will be relatively light and I can drag in others to help. I'm officially on vacation for Thursday and Friday so only the worst of workplace catastrophes will be heeded.

Back to work... still so much to get done tonight.
