I just don't get 'reality' TV shows. I find them as entertaining as vacuuming the living room, yet I seem to be the only person left not held in thrall by Survivor, The Apprentice or Project Runway.

Ridiculous assignments given by self-righteous superiors to minor league bitchy queens. I see that at work daily... why would anyone want to watch it on TV on their own time?

+1

Project Runway is all kinds of awesome. I think it's because, as you say, it's about the act of creation. There's also something to be said for having people-who-happen-to-be-gay as characters, which is unfortunately something of a novelty.

I join you in the "not getting it" in the same way I don't get "football."

I don't get golf, either.

I mean, I understand how it works, what I don't get is why. It's human fetch (the human hits the ball, the human fetches the ball, lather/rinse/repeat). It's tidying up -- you take the little ball and put it in the little hole.

(and I really don't get golf on teevee)

I actually took golf in college (that'd be "in university" to you Canadians) for a Phys Ed credit. I got an A even though my ball exploded in mid-air during the "final".

Golf is just an excuse for men to get away from their wives and walk around for a while. Think about it - how many gay golfers do you know?

You took golf. For University credit. Towards a post-secondary degree. Golf.

Did your academic institution also offer underwater basketweaving for academic credit?

well that's amusing enough, in a "my dog ate my homework" way, though presumably you had witnesses to this untoward event.

Golf is just an excuse for men to get away from their wives and walk around for a while. Think about it - how many gay golfers do you know?

only one, but his golfball exploded in mid air and I don't think he golfs now. Acksherly, the "getting away from the little woman" explanation does make some kind of sense.

But it doesnt explain Golf TV.

My other Phys Ed credit was fencing. I figured as a theatre major I might need them - one on-stage, one for schmoozing.

My Dad watches a lot of golf on TV, but I think that's just his code for "taking a nap" since he watches most of it with his eyes closed.

oooh, how swashbuckling! did you get to wear tights and a tricorn hat too? Are there photos, with/without the Errol Flynn costume? Enquiring minds need to know!

I don't question the logic of your choices, by any means.

"The Scots, who invented bagpipes and called it 'music', and who invented haggis and called it 'food', also invented golf and called it 'fun'."

(Golf TV has the same soporific effect on me)

I don't watch them either, although someone in my household who shall remain nameless does sometimes Tivo them & watch them.

What I really don't get about the whoel reality show thing is that people actually think that they are real, and don't understand the power of editing!

Not only don't I get "reality" TV shows, I don't get TV. Literally. I don't own a TV by choice. Sometimes I'll watch DVDs on a laptop... that's the extent of my TV exposure.

No, Brian, you're NOT the only one - as these comments will make clear. They don't do a thing for me either.

Clearly there IS a market for them, though -- did you latch on to the brouhaha here in the Great White North of late? CBC, in some attempt to attract a larger audience over the summer, is broadcasting some reality/talent search show (name unremembered at the moment), and in order to be able to simulcast it on summer evenings is moving The National, the flagship news broadcast of Mother Corp (er, that the CBC for non-Canajun readers) an hour later. The evening news, bumped later to make way for a reality show. There have been many heads (mine included) shaking over this one [ "is nothing sacred???"]

Anyhoo, there is some Canadian content here -- the host is to be George Strombolopolous, who has a one-hour show daily on CBC Newsworld which comments on the nooz-du-jour, presently on summer hiatus.

Just this morning, the political cartoon in the Trawna Star comments on Strombo -- and another recent, tragic story that you reported earlier this week. (not sure how long that URL is good for).

I like the offbeat ones: Mad Mad House was hilarious! (I'm not sure it was supposed to be as funny as it is to us two "alts")

Nashville Star. I do watch that.

I would rather have root canal than watch Survivor or American Idol.

The only reality show worth anything is "Drawn Together" on Comedy Central - the animated reality show.

Seriously, I watched about five minutes of "Survivor" once. There was a bunch of people sitting around a fire bitching about each other. I ended up hoping none of them got off the island.

I didn't even watch that much.

Alex will watch "Drawn Together" sometimes. Since it's animated, we really can't have it on if Keely is up, since it would catch her attention.

Especially since it's on 2 hours earlier here.
