Wiarton Willie passes away
Jul. 11th, 2006 03:19 pmThe official weather forecasting groundhog of Wiarton, Ontario, passes away at 11 AM today following an extended illness. He was believed to be eight years of age.
Willie will be cremated and his ashes entombed next to a small stone shrine in the town's central park after a short memorial service next Monday.
I'm not making this up. Seriously. I have a rich fantasy life but this is beyond anything I could dream up.

RIP Wiarton Willie
Date: 2006-07-11 10:11 pm (UTC)Of course, groundhogs don't have an humongous lifespan. I can't recall how long ago - about six or eight years back - the festivities at Wiarton got a decided crimp when (the then current) Wiarton Willie failed to emerge at all -- apparently, he'd passed away in the burrow.
I would have thought that albino groundhogs were few and far between, but they seem to manage.
