Earlier this week, my home XP workstation died. It was clearly a software issue and one that I had seen before (lsass.exe issues). The machine would boot nearly to completion, then choke, die and automatically reboot once again only to choke & die ad infinitum.

Just this morning, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str's XP workstation also died, the first time we've ever had issues with it. In this instance, the hard drive seems to have croaked.

After a couple of hours of tedious work, my XP box is back in running order once again. [livejournal.com profile] kent4str's machine however will have to wait until I can get a replacement hard drive. I suspect I'll be able to rescue the data from his old hard drive but I wouldn't trust the boot blocks again.
