Pass The Ocean, Hon!
May. 8th, 2006 10:41 amWe're back from four days of square dancing in Rehoboth, DE. I'd have written more about the fly-in in smaller installments but the wireless network of our bed & breakfast was down and I had precious little spare time to go looking elsewhere anyway. Other than the network problem, our stay at the Royal Rose Inn was flawless; the hottub in which to soak our tired feed after dancing was most welcome. And yes, we've made our reservations for next year. :-)
Overall, I think the event was a great success... we had lots of dancers who seemed to be having a good time, although I don't have the precise headcount currently. I spent almost all of my time in the A2 hall, although I was occasionally dragged into a Plus or MS set to complete a square where needed.
Staff callers included Anne Uebelacker, Mike Desisto, Sandy Bryant, Dayle Hodge, Ett McAtee and Chi-Chi Hoffner, although now that I think of it, I only ever danced to Mike and Dayle the entire time. One of the joys of beingreally old experienced at such sprawling events is knowing that one may pick & chose when to dance. I have nothing against Anne, Sandy or Chi-chi, it's just that they were calling levels I didn't want to dance or couldn't dance, or I've danced to them many times in recent months. The number of times I've danced to Mike can be counted on one hand so I was particularly eager to attend his sets; I've recorded a couple of hours of his material for transcription & research purposes when time allows.
I was a little irked that
kent4str and I were snagged into hosting the GCA calling slots on Friday & Saturday. It's not that I didn't want play host, but it grates my project manager nerves to be given a task at the last minute when it should have happened months prior. On a separate issue, it also grates a little that the GCA slots were scheduled during the lunch hour of each day: 99% of the dancers were rightfully out on the town having something to eat, and I would have liked to have done so as well --perhaps it was a subtle hint that I need to eat a little less.
In any case, Kent hosted the MS/Plus dancing in the main hall while I hosted the A2 session in the fire hall. Chi-Chi Hoffner, Chris Phelan and Nick "Uncle Fester" Martellacci all guest-called at least one A2 tip; I had one tip myself on Friday and two on Saturday. We had only enough bodies for one or two squares in each session but we made up for the numbers with enthusiasm.
One of the pleasant surprises of this particular fly-in was seeing John Anderson of Phoenix, AZ. We had met and chatted briefly at the Phoenix convention two summers ago, but hardly saw him at all at the San Jose convention last year. This time, we had four days and he couldn't escape us. :-)
While I did get a chance to drift by the chocolate shop on the main street of Rehoboth, I didn't get a chance to blow a wad of cash there: as enthusiastic as I was about chocolate, the line of people in front of me and the knowledge that my finances will be tested by our upcoming Seattle/Vancouver trip later this month kept me in check. Likewise for ice cream: we only made one pilgrimmage to Cold Stone Creamery, but I made up for it by getting the largest serving available of the "chocolate devotion."
In all, I have about 170 photos to sort through & label. If I weren't up to my ears in work at the moment, I'd be working on that little project, but it'll have to wait for a little while. Thank god the Baltimore folks aren't dancing this coming Tuesday: we all need a little break.
