A tip is a square dance unit of measure. Typically, it's a single session within a full dance in which dancers will dance to extemporaneous ("patter") calling for 5-7 minutes, then dance for a 3-4 minute singing call ("a singer"). The dancers will then thank the dancers in their square and take a few minutes' break before forming up in a square again for the next session. Each combo of patter+singer is a tip.
Just like technical conferences, we have birds-of-a-feather special sessions. These vary in size and may last 30-60 minutes, depending on the popularity. The bear tip is for bears & admirers; the leather tip has an expectation of everyone dancing in leather; the redwood tip is for tall folks, the munchkin tip for the shorter dancers, a women's tip for women only, etc.. Sometimes the hosting committee will make time & space available for make-your-own specialty tips: at the last big gay convention, someone (fuzzygruff?) organized a session of LJ members.
