Night Shift #3

bjarvisI'm finding the 12-13 hour shifts more problematic than working nights. I barely have enough time to commute home, get some sleep and eat something before it's time to head back to the office.
This should be my last night shift for a while. I'm finding it easier to work through the night but the transition was difficult, as will the transition back to day shifts on Monday. Kent and I saw each other for about 15 minutes this morning before I fell asleep and again for about 30 minutes this evening before I headed to work. He's taking the separation harder than me but we'll back into our usual routine in another couple of days.
I'm missing the DC Lambda Squares community square dance in Beltsville tonight too, which is a little annoying.
As I drove to work tonight, I saw the sun setting as a ruby sphere on the treeline, just like the dawn at the end of the first night shift two nights ago. The symmetry has a certain appeal.
Tonight's work should be very light: I have only five work tickets, three of which are trivial and two of which are basically instructions to do nothing (that is, do not perform the tasks traditionally performed on the night of the second Saturday of the month). I intend to catch up on some typing, continue working on the IAGSDC 2009 project plan and, if the appropriate systems have their maintenance completed in time, update some work tickets I've created for next month.
Had I a brain, I would have brought my laptop and slide scanner to the office with me so I could start digitizing the latest pile o' several hundred slides from the out-laws. My original plan was to have the lot done before they returned from their current vacation in September but that's looking more unlikely: I can scan about one slide per minute and I think there are at least seven trays of 100 slides each. That's only 12 hours of work (rounding up) but it's so tedious that my attention drifts quickly.
