You are the space shuttle formerly known as Challenger.

Born in heady days of can-do engineering and damn-the-budget planning, you were pretty neat in theory.  Still, you & your siblings quickly swallowed up all the resources in your path while you were under development.  While you had a few good rounds in your youth, you were ultimately behind in technology, a drain on the budget and ended your career in a disastrous if somewhat colourful display of fireworks.  You are doomed to be a metaphor for a number of not very nice things about human nature.
