Trust me, you don't want to deal with depression.

There have been weeks when getting out of bed was a major accomplishment.

I had a bout of what I believe was undiagnosed depression around 1990 or so which lasted for 2-3 weeks; I came out of it just as my boyfriend of the time was working on finding me professional help. It was utterly miserable and not something I'd wish on anyone. Fortunately, I've had nothing serious since then.

I'm with poetrytoweasels on this. You don't want to go anywhere near chronic depression. I realized what was going on and sought treatment around 1998; in retrospect I now realize that I had been depressed, sometimes seriously, more or less continuously since I was a teenager. It's an awful thing.
