I remember the old days when seagate drives would often not be able to unpack the heads. The solution was to remove the drive from the computer, whack it a few times with the back end of a screwdriver, and the reinstall the drive. I must have done that about 20 times to various drives and never had any failures. Scared the heck out of folks watching, though.
