most headrests can be removed (pull vertically up, sometimes there's a button somewhere proximate to finally release 'em). While you won't need it in THIS case again, you could have removed the rear (and passenger?) headrests and left 'em on the rear seat for Mr Avis to reinstall; that might have given a little (I realise, not enough) more visibility.
