The hotel cost versus the real cost of soft drinks and other items is pretty normal in every city, even in Canada. Everywhere I have been, I go buy what I want outside the hotel/tourist area, and bring it back to the hotel.
In Slovakia, there was a small convenience kiosk right outside the hotel. All I had to do was walk 20 feet outside, giving up the ability to put things on the room tab, to get the same item at 25% the hotel cost.
