In our office in Cambridge we dressed very casually - e.g I wore shorts and tee-shirt in the summer. We had a customer visit scheduled so we all dressed up in suits and ties (which I rarely ever wore in those days - early 80's). The customer knew we were very casual so they wore jeans etc. We all had a great laugh.
Once I was interviewing someone (who I knew) for a manager's job. He came in suit and tie and said I hope that wearing this won't be a point against me. I did hirehim.
