Back when it was possible, I always gave my N-units US Savings Bonds (they subsequently put so much hassle into buying them for someone else that I just gave up). I figured that the kids didn't really need anything right then, and maybe they would get the idea of saving for later.
My brother works for the US Post Office, so if I forget to mail him a birthday card or something, I just tell him I did send it and it must have gotten lost in the mail. He will then tell me stories of mail that's gotten lost or misdelivered.
