I'. currently struggling with a decision on whether to buy a new car. Mine current one is 10 years old and while it runs OK I know there is an exhaust issue looming which will be expensive to fix. The starter, alternator, water pump are all original. There are plenty of things that could start breaking just due to age.
I can't decide a reasonable threshold where the cost of repairs means I should bite the bullet and find a new-to-me vehicle. I'm thinking a years worth of car payments might be the limit.
