You said the operator lived near you. Did you have dial telephone service or was it crank (magneto) or local common battery (number please when you removed the receiver?)
For a time when my folks had a "summer" (summer in parentheses because it was 'winterized' [not really just a forced air oil furnace installed])in Whitefield, Maine and we had an eight party line with our ring being one long and one short.)
