I heard the segment, too. My take was that we can't step away from e-mail, texts, the cell phone, because the reward of expected good news (or even if we are waiting bad news, then that). I know that at home I'll constantly check my e-mail, do the same at work, too. Like rats who are rewarded randomly, since we don't know when the goodie will come, we keep checking. I know I'm disappointed when I refresh LJ and no one has posted in the last 10 - 20 - 30 - 40 minutes. Rats who are rewarded on schedule, only check around the scheduled time. Obviously, we're more complex than rats, but the lizard brain that gets the rewards isn't.
Technology in itself isn't bad. But I'm not a neo-luddite without good reason.
