I've frequently posited that the US' biggest obstacle to starting one's own business or becoming a contractor is the lack of access to affordable health care. It's not particularly cheap in a group plan but it's impossibly expensive for an individual. The COBRA option is a huge joke for someone on the paltry benefits most states ooffer.
