re: daddy #2's shorts: those are in Burberry Check, the hallmark of Burberry's Ltd. They are a long-established and very high-end haberdashery outfit in the UK, and the market they go for would be called "preppy" in NAmerica. The check started out as lining for raincoats, but then came outside and became how the well-heeled showed their quality.
ah, but then it started to backfire. burberry check became trendy among "chavs" - football hooligans, & Vicky Pollard if you've watched "Little Britain". The BBC explains it here
