Until recently, under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement, Mexican and Canadian professionals in certain fields of employment could obtain a one year "TN-1" employment visa to work in the US with relatively little paperwork or expense. While a one year visa doesn't sound especially inviting, it was at least renewable indefinitely for one year intervals.

As of Tuesday, US Citizenship & Immigration Services has extended the TN-1 term from one year to three years, renewable indefinitely. Yay!

This has no effect on me personally as I'm currently a permanent resident (green card). Still, it should give some folks the security to make realistic life plans, eg. long-term leases, purchasing a home, retirement savings, etc..
