I had a teacher in 5th grade geography who mentioned "learning by association" and gave as her example how she, personally, memorized the capital of Iraq.
It seems her father, who was over six feet tall, used to constantly knock the shampoo rack off the showerhead. So she'd say to herself: "Iraq; the rack; Dad knocked the rack off the wall; bad Dad." ;-)
Of course, the only reason I remember this whole thing is it tells like a joke, and boy can I memorize jokes! (Much to gmjambear's dismay of course.)
