Totally not on topic, but I always tell this story at mention of Harpers Ferry -- a company of soldiers from my hometown Marlborough, MA were stationed there during the Civil War at one of several encampments guarding the Potomac river-crossings.
They 'salvaged' the engine house bell from the Harpers Ferry fire station where John Brown had been besieged and arrested three years earlier, and later shipped it back to Marlborough, where it was named the "John Brown Bell"; to this day it stands on the town common.
I know, that was totally unrelated to your trip prep... I just find that little anecdote interesting for some reason :-)
