I was just reading that WiMax has been deployed in a handful of cities in the US, including Washington DC. Click here for the story.

While I've heard of the protocol and the usual drama around finalizing the standard, I hadn't heard of the local deployment. Anyone out there used it yet? I'm curious about its real-world coverage, speed, resiliency, etc..

Here in Seattle the clearwire service http://clearwire.com has been advertising like crazy and lots of businesses have a clearwire "machine" so you can try it out (basically just another place to access the net.) The promotion at present is that you can get the clearwire service for $20/month for the first three months. $37/month after that for 1.5 Mbps downloads. Doesn't say anything about what data rate you get for upload which may mean that it's dog slow for uploads. It's unknown and not generally revealed. Maybe if you call their cust. svc. they'll tell you. I don't know.
