Haircut

I just had the quickest haircut of my life.

I missed my chance to get a leisurely haircut at my regular barber Wednesday afternoon. As an alternate, I decided to try a different barber much, much closer to home this morning. His shop is well hidden from the main street and I only discovered him by having some artwork framed at a shop across the street from him; I was previously delighted to know his hours are 8 AM to 7 PM too, giving me much more scheduling flexibility.

At 9:15 AM, he had no other customers so I was seated immediately. In a mere 4 minutes, he had buzzed me with a #2 setting, shaved down the back of my neck, ran a quick vacuum over my head to remove bits of hair and showed me the results. And despite the quick time, it's actually a pretty good haircut, vastly better than Paul-the-barber-who-can't-do-math that I made the mistake of using a while ago. And all for $12.

As I was getting a donut at the shop next door with my sudden burst of spare time, I figured if he could push through enough heads to fill an hour at $12 each, that's $180/hour... :-)

I'm loving the buzzed hair for the low maintenance of it all. Doesn't it rock?!?

When I was a kid my dad took us to a barber in the next town over once a month for haircuts. This guy spent more time chatting with the people waiting for haircuts than he did actually cutting hair. When I was in college I still went to him when I was home. If I happened to be the only customer in the shop it took about 5 minutes. If there was anyone else there it was easily 30 minutes.

Only cost $5 though so I shouldn't complain. :-)

After many years of paying way too much for haircuts that didn't look that great, Randy took me to his barber, a blue-collar haircutting salon in Hayward, staffed by a bunch of delightfully raunchy women who give terrific $10 cuts.

Randy likes flat-tops and high-and-tights, and those require maintenance cuts every two to three weeks, and he found that these gals' $10 haircut is just as good or better than a $25 or $30 cut somewhere else.

And they all love us. Which is kinda cool. :)

$14 a pair of clippers at Wallgreens and never pay for a haircut again. (wink)

I too got a fast buzzcut this week -- popped into a new shop and Jose (middle aged, fat, dumpy, nice, efficient, and good) took about 8 minutes to do a #1 on the sides, lengthier on top, shave the bakc of my neck and use a massager thing on my head and shoulders.

DC price: $20 bucks plus $3 tip.
