Several folks have been posting photos of their work space.

I figure I have four work spaces. The photo below is the cube in Urbana, MD, where my I earn the 95% of my income; other work spaces include my home computer room and the two dance floors where I've done nearly all of my square dance calling.

The photo doesn't really do my cube justice. The space is actually a little larger than is shown and includes a large filing cabinet to the right and a smaller one with a chair to the left. I couldn't squeeze these into the photo as that would require me standing on the desk of the cube across the row from me; even that wouldn't work as the corridors between rows are relatively narrow and our cube doorways are offset for a small amount of privacy. Getting a proper line-of-sight for a good photo was more trouble than it was worth.

Yup, there's three computers in there: my personal laptop (left), office laptop (center) and Sun Microsystems workstation (right). Note as well the display row of square dance flyers in the upper right... there's many more hiding out of view of the camera. :-)

Note as well the stack of papers in the left corner: these are policies & standards docs and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance files I spent much of 2006 assembling. The critical stuff has been passed on to the appropriate folks and these are the remaining pieces to be sorted into stuff I'll keep for my own reference and stuff which will be shredded/recycled. Such is the excitement of my life.

Just to the left of the center computer is my Palm Tunsten E2, my faithful & trusty if somewhat moody companion. It sits majestically on top of the single most important document in my cube: my work log. Every significant action or communication made any time during the business day is recorded by hand in my log. It's a small bit of personal paranoia left over from my contractor days, just in case anyone should ever question an invoice. That has never happened, but the ongoing log has become an interesting personal work-related journal of the past 10 years and has saved my butt a couple of times when I needed to come up with quick answers for what-I-did-this-year performance reviews and haven't-I-seen-this-problem-before-and-how-did-we-fix-it-then questions.

Yes, Dear, you do indeed put the "/" in "anal/retentive".

Everyone else, welcome to my life.
