Ouch! That's a huge reason why I could never live in California: I'd be trapped in buyer's remorse from the moment I applied my signature to the purchase agreement.
I can kinda rationalize the amount of property tax we pay in our county even if I never actually get the full value directly: I don't have kids in the school system, for example. But I don't think I could persuade myself that $6,800 in property taxes was worthwhile... my sense of charity to the common good isn't that strong.
