US Census, Part Deux
Aug. 30th, 2010 04:09 pmEarlier this year, we completed the short form census for our household which had been mailed to us. Last week, we got a letter saying that we would be asked to complete a second, more thorough census survey within a week. That form arrived today.
We have the option of filling in this extended form online or on paper. To save a few cents of postage, I opted to fill it out online.
Oops.
Wow, this web-based system is slow. I choose to generously believe the slowness is due to a vast number of faithful US residents such as myself enthusiastically submitting their data. The other possibility is that the bunch running this show just didn't properly model the capacity required for this part of the survey. It's probably the latter but since I can't make a difference one way or another, I choose the option that is easier on my blood pressure.
As with every survey I've ever completed, it's tough to resist being a smart-ass. For example, we were asked if we had lived anywhere else on April 1 than our current residence. The answer submitted, of course, was that we each had resided only at this house. It took effort however not to say that one spent part of the time in jail/prison while other spent time in child care. Each of us is white but I could have had some momentary fun planning spin-the-dial with the race menu.
Rest assured however, dear Americans, our data was submitted precisely and correctly. We're boring, but we're accurate.
