Stumbling Blocks
Sep. 1st, 2009 07:59 pmI slept in a little bit this morning, but not too much. In all, I slept rather well.
Our hope this morning was to finish staining the deck, but that plan died fairly quickly. The can of stain we bought in Moundsville, WV, yesterday isn't the correct colour. Sure, it says it is Olympic's "717 redwood" but it looks a light chocolate brown rather than the dark chestnut brown we had been using up to this point. We even tried spraying a sample in an innocuous spot, hoping that the dried colour would more closely match our goal, but it was not to be. Damn.
kent4str is still in DC for the next couple of days so we relayed this information to him, hoping that he can purchase two additional cans of stain from our local Lowes, hopefully with the same batch number. Of course, that means we can't finish the deck until Friday. *sigh*
As much as I just wanted to finish the entire deck project, I was also somewhat glad I was granted this reprieve: I got too much sun yesterday and my shoulders & back are now very temperature-sensitive. Standing in direrct sunlight was uncomfortable, bordering on painful. First the knee, now my skin... it sucks getting old. Ah well, I'll be fine again in a couple of days.
I am still technically on duty at work --I'm just telecommuting from here as I would from our home office-- so the bulk of the daylight hours were spent working on office issues. This morning, I had two major items in my queue with a third newly assigned to me. Through the course of the day, I was able to knock off one of the tasks; the new item had to be punted back to the source for clarification.
While there is free wifi here at Roseland mooching off the main hall, it's not the quickest or most robust. Further, we can't reach the wifi signal from our trailer so I have to sit on the dining hall porch to do stuff and I'm at the mercy of my netbook's battery. And my Crackberry voice functions don't work there although data functions like email & instant messaging do.
Verizon's wireless broadband works well from our trailer and I can plug in my netbook there all day; it's also faster than the camp's wifi. All Crackberry functions work there too. My Verizon plan however has a 250 MB/month limit so I'm avoiding FaceBook and LJ usage while using the modem.
Tonight, we have nothing particularly planned. I may transcribe more square dance recordings and write some additional choreo; I also have two books to read. There's a chance I'll soak my knee in the hottub later as well although I suspect my sensitive skin may object to the hot water very quickly. We'll see how it goes.
