Last night was eventful around the campground.
I was on the deck of our trailer around 10:30pm or so, looking at Jupiter with my telescope, along with three of its satellites. I heard some loud arguing from the trailer up the hill from us --lots of "Get the f*** off my property!" and such-- but kept my eyes on the telescope. As a personal policy, I don't need or want to get involved in the personal disagreements of relative strangers: it's none of my business.
After a few minutes, the shouting died down and all was fine. Then a heard a vehicle start and the engine revving very high. I could also hear gravel being spun out from under its wheels: someone was clearly accelerated hard. There was a couple of seconds pause, then the gravel spitting and engine revving started again. And again.
And then I heard the same sounds combined with a loud thud and breaking glass. Looking up the hill, I saw only the row of trailers above us, each visible by their interior lights. I then heard the collision sound again and one of the trailers lurched in my direction. Then another collision and another sudden lurch. And another!
Yup, someone was ramming a trailer with their car!Now I was worried. I wasn't sure how much space remained between the trailer and the crest of the hill. If the trailer was nudged far enough, it would potentially roll down on our trailer! I got the guys out of our site (they were reading inside during all of this) and ran down to the management office to alert the staff.
By the time I returned, the offended driver and his vehicle had headed out of the campground.
Checking in the dark, I was somewhat relieved to see that the trailer would have had to have been pushed 20-30 feet before it would be a danger to anyone further down the hill so our site was safe. I also learned that the initial sounds were of this guy, Paul, using his SUV to push the trailer owner's BMW backwards about 10 feet so he could get a good run at the trailer itself, then rammed the out-facing slide-out of the trailer with such force that it pushed it into the interior, bent the overall frame of the trailer, damaged its roof and damaged the fence of the sun deck on the far side. Heaven knows what damage the SUV took, but he left his tail-lights on the ground by the impact site.
I'm told the trailer owner and Paul (of Washington, PA) had been dating for two months. I'm guessing that relationship is now over.
The trailer itself was brand new when it was moved on-site this past April. There's no doubt it's a complete write-off but the insurance adjustor will have to inspect it tomorrow (Monday).
( Photos of the carnage... )We've been camping here for four years. I have never seen anything like this before. Indeed, the worst I've witnessed to this point was merely a drunk patron being cut off at the bar. Hopefully, this little incident --which I'm sure will be talked about for years to come-- will be the worst we'll ever see.
Drama at a trailer park... who knew?
