Last Night's Club Night
Jul. 25th, 2008 07:13 amI was supposed to be calling Plus and Advanced for the DC Lambda Squares last night. Reality turned out to be more interesting.
I arrived a half-hour early thanks to unusually good traffic and was surprised to discover two different DCLS committees/groups meeting at the church. My surprise was that there exists any DCLS committee in which I'm not a member, let alone two. It turned out one was a regular board meeting --I'm not on the board-- and the other was an organizational meeting of dancers interested in forming an exhibition group. While exhibition dancing intrigues me, I couldn't fit yet another on-demand task like that into my schedule.
When the evening's dancing started, I called the first tip at Plus then the second Advanced. Our newest callers,
meinfs and Happy then alternated figures for the Plus tip and I called the singer. Dave Decot and hubby Craig Mahaffey were in town and attending so we drafted Dave to call a short A2 tip next. The next Plus was entirely called by Abe Feldman.
The crowd was thinning by shortly after 9 PM (we started at 7:30 PM) so I called our next Advanced set with a full square and two A2 couples tagging in. I kept the sequences relatively short but ran the entire set about 2 minutes longer so everyone could play; I think it was some of the best wind-in-your-face Advanced I've called to date. When the next tip came up, I realized we had no-one but Advanced dancers to I finished with A2, slightly more difficult material but still very successful.
I still need to figure out a date our basement is available for another caller workshop to get more experience and mic time for Happy and
meinfs... tentatively, August 10 looks good but I have to confirm some previously scheduled items first.
