This trip to Roseland Resort was bittersweet: it was closing weekend, the end of the camping season until April, 2008.

The daytime weather was unseasonably warm to the point where I was tempted to turn on the air conditioning on Sunday. The evenigns however were on the cool side so I was happy to be housed in a trailer with its own furnace.

The leaves were changing colour, making for some beautiful scenery.

There is much new construction in progress on the campgrounds. The management is very tight-lipped on the work in progress, wanting to keep it as a surprise.

The one item which isn't being kept hush-hush is the assembly of an observatory on the hill behind our trailer. One of the seasonal campers is undertaking the project and will be installing an 8" telescope. Campers are welcome to attend viewing sessions and classes.

Clearly, big things are happening this fall and spring! )

Saturday was largely spent being tourists in nearby Moundsville, WV.

Moundsville has two outstanding features which place it on the map:

1. two state penitentiaries, one downtown, a relic of 1866, and the current one on the edge of town. The former is open for tours, the latter is not. We were too late in the afternoon to tour the old prison but it was very impressive from the outside.
2. prehistoric burial mounds, especially one in the center of town. Again, we were too late to visit the adjacent museum and research center so we'll have to come back for that.

As mentioned above, this was the closing weekend of the campground. All of Sunday morning and early afternoon was spent winterizing: boxing up the perishables to take home, cleaning the trailer inside & out, stuffing paper products and linens into plastic bins, flushing non-toxic antifreeze into the water system, disconnecting power & water and then ultimately wrapping the entire machine to protect it against the elements.

Camping season resumes in early April, 2008. I can't wait!

Had a fantastic time tonight dancing C1 with the Ettseteras in College Park, MD.

I was a few minutes late arriving; there were two full squares on the floor so I was the odd guy out. Still, [livejournal.com profile] justetthon added me to the rotation for the next set which I then danced as a girl. The next time up, [livejournal.com profile] zzbear and Larry B. were sitting out so they tagged in as floating partners: I danced boy with one for a figure, then the other tagged in while I slid over to dance girl, then I tagged out while one tagged in as a boy and the other slid over to be a girl, etc..

One of dancers had to leave early so I had a permanent partner for the rest of the evening. It wasn't exactly high energy dancing but we added a bit of pep where we could without causing complete chaos.

We're dark the next usual dance date, November 12, as the hall is booked. The next Ettseteras dance is November 26 with me calling. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] justetthon!
