ASGRA Rodeo, Day 1
Sep. 8th, 2007 11:04 amLast night was the trail-in dance at the Hyatt in downtown DC.
Our little group rendez-vous'ed at home in the early evening, dressed for the occasion and headed to Union Station to park and have dinner at America.
Following dinner, we walked the few blocks over to the Hyatt, meeting up with most of the other DC Lambda Squares folks in the lobby of the hotel.
For the most part,
kent4str,
cuyahogarvr and I simply lazed around the lounge areas outside of the ballroom: I simply didn't have the energy or fortitude to go out into the larger crowd or to attempt two-stepping. Friday nights aren't the best time for high-energy activities after a long and exhausting week at work.
There wa lots of very distracting eye candy on the floor... I wished for my camera but indoor shots in low light with a flash is just annoying so I'll just have to trust to fond memory. :-)
Our DCLS dance demo performance was originally scheduled for 1 AM but some negotiation moved it back to midnight, still not a great time but better than before. Alas, the drag queen performances ran late so we were still nearly a half-hour behind when we finally took the floor.
Despite the number of us that were dragging severely, we acquitted ourselves well with Howard Richman calling to two squares. I did a quick 60 second spiel on the mic about DCLS, our open house and such stuff, then we collected unsuspecting non-square dancers from the audience for a brief impromptu tip, then closed with another demo.
Note to self: next time there are two squares on the floor, be a bit more aggressive about putting the clearly stronger square in front and the weaker square behind. I wasn't running the event and I couldn't immediately think of a diplomatic way of tackling it, but I think I'll be a little more assertive next year. That said, this was one of our most successful demos ever at an ASGRA evening dance and I'm cautiously optimistic that a few of the folks present will be at our open house.
Following the demo,
