Last night as UNIX primary has left me rather tired. The hours as primary are usually long and I'm tired by the end of the week, but it's unusual for me to be this tired so soon.
While calling for the Plus square dance class last night, my pager sounded with an emergency.
kent4str took up calling while I started making telephone calls, learning that a non-production server was having issues with swap space. Being non-production, this wouldn't be a big deal but it was a server owned by a highly visible group who doesn't hesitate to scream loudly at the top tiers of the corporation if they don't get instant service.
I began making telephone calls but had no success. There simply wasn't anyone I could find in any of our offices at 8 PM: the day shift had left and the night crew wasn't in yet. Of the telephone numbers I had on hand, all were out of the office, on vacation or shifted their hours for training classes this week. My pager likewise didn't have any contacts I could use. I tried calling our messaging center to page folks but no one answered at the center either.
Eventually, I found someone who could page someone else who could log in to address the issue so I could return to the class. It took a half-hour of effort.
As it turned out, the server continued having issues because of a severe memory leak in an application, but I needed to sit on a conference call with the apps team from 10 PM to nearly 11:30 PM, making for a relatively late night when the alarm is going off at 6 AM the next morning.
I've invested the last half-hour updating my pager and Palm entries with nearly everyone still employed in my division. While it won't help when people aren't at their desks, I'll feel a little less helpless should I be caught in this situation again.
