bjarvis: (Chesapeake Squares)
Saturday's portion of the fly-in was quite fun.

I danced a little, filling in a few squares where required. I recorded a couple of hours of C1 material called by John Marshall for later research and transcription; I haven't listed to the recordings yet to determine the audio quality but I'm sure it's fine.

[livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr continued to be under the weather to a worrisome degree but his resistance to dinner was minimal. The ice cream for dessert probably helped. :-)

[livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I co-hosted the GCA Mainstream hour and the GCA Plus hour. We had more guest callers this year than last: Chris Phelan, Chi Chi Hoffner and Alan Hirsch. I called a tip in the Mainstream hour while Kent called a tip to close the Plus. Success all around, I think.

We also assisted in directing bodies for the grand march again this year, our third in a row. It's a easy chore with quick, satisfying results, simply directing bodies in alternating directions as they march down the center of the main hall, looping them until we have squares of eight bodies.

Feeling somewhat drained, we collectively returned to the bed & breakfast shortly after the evening's raffle drawings and were in bed by midnight.

I'm delighted to report [livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr was his normal happy self again once he had his morning coffee. Whatever bug had him under the weather for the past few days had finally cleared. Yay!

I slept a little late myself so I quickly put myself together, then dashed over to the "Intro to C2" class with John Marshall. OMG, I should have doubled up my caffeine intake before that one! Fortunately, we were all in an utterly twisted state of mind --John included. I don't remember the last time I laughed so far and so long on the dance floor before!

In the subsequent hour, I danced one tip of C1 to John (recording that one and the other tips) but had to spend the bulk of the hour handling minor administrative issues (checking out of the B&B, making reservations at The Breakers and submitting our early bird registrations for next year's fly-in, etc.).

Dayle Hodge hosted the GCA A2 calling hour this afternoon. Chris Phelan, Drew Allen all Chi Chi Hoffner called tips; [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I shared a tip, and [livejournal.com profile] justetthon closed the hour with an energetic A2 set. Success all around, I think!

I didn't dance much the rest of the day, having had my comfortable fill. I took some more photos (will post the lot soon), said good-bye to various folks who were heading out early and helped clean up the dance halls as the event wound down.

On the way out of town, Jay W. gave us a tour of his condo in Rehoboth (available for summer rentals). After a little shopping at the outlet malls --there's no sales tax in Delaware-- we headed for home.

Usually the trek home is a little arduous: the first Sunday of May is traditionally the time of the public bridge walk when one span of the Bay Bridge is opened to exclusively pedestrian traffic, requiring all vehicles to share the western span. This is a great PR move and I'm sure it's a delightful scene but the pain to traffic to those of us returning to DC is tremendous. As luck would have it this year, however, high winds forced the cancellation of the bridge walk, keeping both spans open for traffic: we were home in just a few hours.

I have comparatively little square dancing scheduled this week!

Monday: I'm not dancing.
Tuesday: I'm not dancing.
Wednesday: OK, I'm dancing C1. Might call a little too.
Thursday: Yeah, dancing. It's the Mainstream class graduation so we'll likely call some too.
Friday: No dancing.
Saturday: No dancing.
Sunday: No dancing.

Note that: there are blocks of 48 hours and 72 hours with no square dancing. This may not happen again in this calendar cycle.

Last October, I learned that a dear friend in Toronto had most likely been murdered. There were clear signs of violence at his home but no sign of Harley.

Today, it was announced that a body found in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, was positively identified as Harley. Harley was killed with a single stab wound to the chest; his body was identified via his dental records.

A memorial is planned for June 2. Since I'll just be arriving back from Denver, it seems unlikely I'll be able to attend. I'll remember him in my own way from here.
