Dec. 3rd, 2006

It's been quiet and relaxing so far this weekend. Hopefully, this trend will continue through today but the odds are against it: I'm the on-call UNIX primary point-of-contact today. If anything explodes at any of our offices, I'm the one receiving the desperate "Fix it! Fix it! Fix it! Is it fixed yet? Fix it!" pages from work.

We do have a person dedicated to the weekend day shifts but he's on vacation currently so the regular weekday folks were each assigned a day to provide coverage. Sunday, Dec 3 is my day. Whee. It should be too bad... Sundays are traditionally quiet and at least I can telecommute. Still, I'm chained to my pager and laptop for the balance of the day.

Yesterday would have been a good day for being on call... outside of scooting out to Sears to replace a dead toaster, we didn't leave the house a single time. That isn't to say I wasn't productive: I renewed our memberships to DC Lambda Squares, caught up on e-mail, did several loads of laundry, created a new e-mail list for the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, sorted some files and other similar personal & domestic chores.

I also renewed my membership to LOPSA, although I can't really say why: I don't perceive any benefit from being a member for the past year. Still, the organization is still new & forming so I'm going to write it up as being supportive with a possibility of future benefit.

My back --primarily the base my neck and left shoulder blade-- have been killing me for two days but spending a lot of time laying flat on a heating pad and using the electric massager has helped immensely. I have almost full range of motion back and very little pain. With a little luck, all will be well again by tomorrow.

Canadian politics following... the other 6 billion people of the planet may wish to skip this. )

Now I'm wondering: are these truly unusual come-from-behind electoral upsets, or am I simply so far out of contact with the rest of Canada that I failed to see all the signals? I'm not losing much sleep on this, but it does make me wonder.

I'm working on sending out Christmas cards to friends & family currently. Would you like one too? I'd be happy to oblige... either leave me your address as a comment (screened for your privacy) or e-mail it to me at bjarvis at livejournal dot com.
