Last Class

Yesterday afternoon, Kent & I called the last of a series of seven Saturday afternoon Mainstream square dance classes in Baltimore.

Our newbies have done very well through the course. As expected, they absorbed a huge number of calls in the early sessions, then the rate of absorption slowly dropped as the calls increased in sophistication and names began to sound or resemble each other in small ways, creating a mental lag in recall. To their credit, they collectively retained more information between sessions than I would have and the most commonly used calls were all done very smoothly with good flow.

After running through the entire call list and workshopping some calls which were causing minor issues --mostly ones freshly introduced in the prior session-- we spent an hour introducing the most common flourishes. I wish we had a full square of angels for that portion for demonstration purposes but we made do with what we had and I think it went well.

Club night is Tuesday but since the center where we dance is a polling station, there's no dancing this week. Hopefully, all club members will come out for the following session on November 14 for the official graduation.

...the proof has been on my car every morning. It is indeed autumn.

Andrew M has been visiting from NYC this weekend. After attending a meeting of the 2009 IAGSDC convention this afternoon, [livejournal.com profile] kent4str and I collected Andrew in downtown DC,then went for a walk through the FDR Memorial and along the Potomac.

Being an idiot, I didn't think to take my camera. The evening lighting and brilliant leaves would have made for superb photos but the following will have to do, feebly captured with my cell phone. sigh

A friend of ours, Frank Muzzy, has artworks being presented at the MDH Fine Arts Gallery, 233 West 19th Street in Manhattan. The reception is Thursday, Nov. 9, 6-9 PM and the exhibition runs through Sunday, Nov. 26. Please do go if you get the chance, and if you see Frank, tell him you read about it here! And to call me some time! :-)
