For the first time in many, many weeks, I have no work-related or square dance-related meetings scheduled for today. That is not to say that I don't have a long and extensive to-do list, but at least I will have fewer interruptions as I plow my way through it.

It almost feels like a holiday. I should have considered telecommuting today.

Yeah, I know I'm a day late but this is the first breathing space I've had in a while so I'm catching up. Hope it was a good day! If I have time later, I'll have a chocolate sundae in your honour.

Geeks know about the notorious worldwide Sony battery recall. For the uninitiated, Sony designs & produces lithium ion batteries for a vast array of laptop manufacturers as well as their own line of computers. There is a design flaw in many of their batteries which causes them to overheat and possibly burst into flames.

The bazillion Dell laptops my employer has deployed --including my own-- use Sony batteries. Although it has performed flawlessly, the powers-that-be dropped by just a moment ago to swap out my laptop battery.

If anything bursts into flames in my cube, it won't be my laptop.

I've been writing documentation fairly steadily since 8 AM. A few minutes ago, I left my cube to stare north out the windows to the horizon for a while to let my eyes relax. A distance away, I saw what I beleived to be faint smoke blowing west to east with the wind. After a moment, I realized it was actually a dense jetstream of flocking birds, something the size of a large sparrow.

Looking as far as I could to the east and west, I could see neither the start nor end of this flow: they simply faded off into the distance in each direction. I began picking out individuals in the stream and it was clear they were moving at a very quick pace. A full 2.5 minutes later, the end of the flock finally flew past.

That's a whopping huge number of birds.
