We have a series of obligated appearances today, the first day of the convention.

The Gay Callers Association has a dance running 10 AM to 1 PM; several of the attendees from the caller school earlier this week will be on mic.

The delegates meeting for the IAGSDC is at 2 PM; I'll be attending on behalf of the GCA. Our club will also be updating the delegates on our progress on our 2009 convention. We'll be selecting the location (Atlanta or Chicago) for the 2010 convention.

The GCA membership meeting is at 5:30 PM and should last 60-90 minutes. We'll be hearing various reports and electing some new officers.

The trail-in dance is also tonight, starting the entire convention officially, although I don't have my registration package yet so I'm not sure when that starts.

The GCA dance earlier today went very well... the schedule was full, the dancing was fun and we typically had 4-6 squares on the floor which makes it a complete success in my books.

Even the IAGSDC delegates meeting went smoothly. Past meetings have been characterized by pointless, nit-picking questions about upcoming convention bids. Of course, delegates should be mindful of the details of a given club's bid to host a future convention, but needling about whether a particular expense is included in line item A or B is an exercise in silliness and prolongs the meeting needlessly, especially since we're considering conventions four years in the future. There was little of that kind of unnecessary distraction this time around. Holding the meeting on the Friday afternoon before the convention opened was also a great idea: it doesn't interfere with dance time, we can reuse the meeting space for a dance hall and an afternoon time gives delegates time to clear their heads before delving into business.

I made my report on behalf of the GCA, grovelling appropriately to the All Join Hands Foundation and the convention organizers for their past and current support of caller school and our GCA calling slots on the schedule. I was particularly relieved not to make a complete stuttering fool of myself.

The big news out of the delegates meeting is largely that the IAGSDC's budget is balanced, the last convention had a whopping huge profit much of which is being distributed forward to upcoming conventions and the 2010 convention will be in Chicago rather than competing Atlanta. Both Atlanta and Orlando have expressed an interest in 2011.

We wrapped up the delegates meeting in two hours instead of the alotted three, which made everyone very, very happy.

The GCA meeting itself ran to 90 minutes instead of 60, but even then it was fairly well managed. We got through the essential business of past reports and such, discussed the confusion and miscommunications concerning the GCA caller slots for this year and will be establishing a new members-only e-mail list (snail-mail fall-back) for general GCA announcements. Tim McNamara has ended his term as vice-president; Chi-Chi Hoffner-Stolarick was elected over Brian Keating for the position.
