If I have any choice in it, I don't get out of bed before 11 AM on a weekend.  Alas, this morning was not one in which I could leisurely arise.

Next Thursday, we're flying to Portland, OR, to visit with [profile] kent4str's family before heading down to Anaheim, CA, for the annual IAGSDC convention and GCA caller school.  I'm still up to my eyeballs in work, especially since I was away from work almost all of this past week.  I don't really need a haircut at the moment, but I'd be looking pretty ugly by the time the middle of the convention rolled around in two weeks; because of scheduling, this morning is the only opportunity for me to get a haircut.

As luck would have it, I got the math-challenged barber at my regular barber shop.  Nice guy, but his english is sparse and his hearing isn't that great anyway --he's probably in his seventies.  Cutting my hair by half should take it to about 1 cm in length... there's a big difference between 1 cm and 3 mm.  Ah, well... it'll grow back eventually.

The worst part is that I tend to close my eyes and relax while the barber is clipping away; I find the sounds of the shop to be comforting, and the gentle trimming motions and occasional touches to slightly change the alignment of my head by the barber to be tremendously relaxing.  I generally zone out and enjoy the platonic sensuality of the experience.  Thus, I was caught totally off cuard when he began trimming my moustache.

In the first clip, he had already taken a chunk out of the left side so when I snapped back to attention, the damage  --IMHO-- was already done.  There was really no recourse but to let him continue trimming along to at least even out the structure & style.  Damn.

On the other hand, the new style actually goes better with my newly minted 3 mm hair so perhaps it was for the best.  And the moustache will grow back even faster than my hair:  I'll have it back to my preferred length in a week or so.

If you're in the vicinity of Druid Hill Park tomorrow (Sun, June 18) for the Baltimore Pride Festival, come by the country/western dance pavillion to say hi!  Kent & I will be conducting "intro to square dancing" sessions at 12, 2 & 4 PM.

Freshly shorn Freshly shorn

The hair is buzzed a little shorter than I like, but it's OK. The moustache got butchered but I should have that grown back in within a week.

After my haircut this morning, I dashed into one of my employer's downtown offices to print off the completed policy documents, 199 pages in all. God willing, on Monday I get a tonne of signatures on these papers from various corporate directors and that particular portion of my Sarbanes-Oxley death march (SODM) will be completed.

Which takes me to the second step of my SODM. sigh

A policy describes the legalize about various practices within my department. Standards describe a specific implementation of the policy so every standard needs to be (a) written and (b) linked back to its relevant parent policy document. Operating guidelines list considerations for a given UNIX platform in support of the standard. Procedures are precise, line-by-line instructions on how a task is conducted such that a trained chimp an intern could do it successfully.

The hierarchy looks something like this:
policy -> standard -> operating guideline -> procedures

Some policies were already 99% assembled but they needed links to policies. I've finished that small task tonight, as well as updated my spreadsheet tracking all of these little pieces. I can sleep now.

Tomorrow, I have to revise my tracking spreadsheet further, ensuring that I have a to-do list of standards which must yet be written to comply with my freshly minted policies. Whee. And on Monday, I get to start writing those missing standards.

I don't even want to think about the procedures and operating guidelines documentation yet.
