Fascinating level of detail. I have a hard time remembering this much detail about my dreams, and I've been having some vivid ones lately.
Anyway, here's my own untrained, strictly non-professional, no claim to any authoritative status whatsoever, just-for-fun take.
I'd go with your interpretation #1.
For one thing, it was your own first choice, and ultimately as long as you are being honest with yourself it seems to me that no one is better situated to interpret your dreams than you are.
Sounds to me like maybe you are feeling guilty about not being there to help them, and anxious about whether someone is trying to take the farm away, or more generally whether your parents are taking proper care of themselves and their situation. The fact that it's you who has to "fix" the situation indicates both your sense of responsibility, your feelings that you may be the only one who can do what needs to be done, as well as your guilt about not being there. The fact that the intruders turn out to be harmless is your way of rationalizing away your guilt; you're telling yourself everything will be okay.
Maybe that's all too obvious, but I tend to believe that simple is the best place to start with anything.
That said, all I know about you is what I glean from your LJ posts. You do seem to be a very responsible type. But I could also be full of baloney.
