Autumn

Fall comes quickly in the DC area.

Last week, I became aware that the days are unmistakably shorter: the skies outside the bathroom window as I showered in the morning were very dark, even at 7 AM.

On Sunday of this week, almost all trees were still clearly green. By Tuesday, I could spot yellow leaves. While driving to work Thursday morning, I noted organge and red colours, and clouds of leaves were blowing across the highway when strong winds blew. Today, it's cool and rainy.

Cold mornings and needing to wear a light jacket aren't too far away. The first frosts of the season should happen in another month, followed by completely denuded trees and early evenings.

I wish I had more spare time available to enjoy the sights at this time of year.

Autumnal Color

Well, there's always the anticipation of that last weekend in October in West Virginia and the hopes that the color will still be holding on. I don't know though as our leaves have changed quite dramatically in the past couple of days also.

I was also shocked at the speed the leaves turned. It's really odd. It reminds me of living in Yellowknife; fall just explodes on you, as does summer.

Yeah, well, when you've got to pack spring, summer, and fall into a week and a half...

Someone give that man a rimshot!

I've frequently commented to friends that the growing season where I grew up is very short. In fact, this year, it's August 2, 1-4 PM: don't miss it! :-)
