We've known Dad was going to pass at some point when he really started showing his age about two years ago, so some of these activities have been rolling around in the back of my head. Dad was also all too aware of his pending end, so he had discussed some of these things with me.
For the most part, I'm just digging through their papers to find traces. I knew they had life insurance; I found it was Primerica by looking at bank statements. I knew his union had benefits, it just took a while to find their booklet of such, and its contact numbers.
The funeral home gave us a helpful checklist of items to look for, and we found that we had covered most of them already. But we're still turning up Dad's medications in the oddest of places, we need to find a good home for his manual & electric wheelchairs (& car hoist), and just last night I was reminded we can cancel his cell phone service.
