The shoes protocol in Japan is very complex. Ditch your shoes when you get to the Ryokan (inn) and switch to going through the corridor slippers. When you get the your room you ditch those and walk with ho shoes in your room. Except when you go to the toilet and slip into toilet slippers. Several times in my trips my room overlooked a garden and I had a door to it. There I switched to garden slippers to walk around. You have to keep thinking about this protocol.
