bjarvis: (Maryland state)

While stopping at a state welcome center to pick up a new map of Maryland --our prior one vanished when the 1998 minivan was stolen back in March-- I noticed an announcement on the desk: Maryland has a sales tax holiday on clothing coming up!

In August 23-27, certain clothing items individually priced $100 or less will be exempt from the state's 5% sales tax. This includes sweaters, shirts, slacks, jeans, dresses, robes, underwear, belts, shoes & boots. It does not include jewelry, watches, handbags, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands or belt buckles.

Each item has to be less than $100 by itself, although the total bill can be more than $100. An item priced more than $100 will have sales tax applied to the entire price of the item.

This should be a big help for parents prepping their kids for school. I wasn't particularly shopping for clothes for myself, but it's now worth waiting a month to save a few extra dollars.

I'm not sure why Mass is called Taxachusetts. We don't have any tax on clothing under $250 and there's no tax on food in grocery stores.

We're having a tax holiday on everything next month too.

Texas also has this. It results in a weekend retail orgy.
