It takes about three months. You have to commit to only trimming along your mouth until the hair at the top reaches all the way down. Until then it tends to be unruly, but once it is all long, then it seems to behave a lot better. I don't do much to mine but run my brush through it when I remember in the mornings. I personally thing it tends to be kind of messy (the grey is a different texture than the brown so it is a little fly-away) but Chip's has a texture similar to mine and he always looks adorable, so I try to just let go of worring about it. Anyway, once you get that base of three months of growth, you will be surprise how much is there. Your upper lip is about the same height as mine, so you should be able to support a similar size mustache, (though your hair is nice and straight so the texture will probably be really pretty like Ron's.)
