Television Abomination Close Call

We've dodged a bullet on this one, thank god: Discovery cancels Michael Jackson autopsy TV show

Honestly, what were they thinking to even suggest such a travesty?

The only thing sadder than proposing such a program is that it was ultimately dumped for legal reasons instead of for being a tasteless horror.

The name "Discovery" sounds great for a TV station. That is, until you actually look at what most of their programming is.

All the cable channels caved from idealism to the absolute lowest common denominator. There are exceptions, of course, but generally it's all "Jersey Shore" and the like.

They were thinking that they'd get RATINGS! That's the only reason any TV network does anything and most usually on some far fetched "reality" programming another branch of "Housewives of __________" (fill in the blank.) It doesn't matter whether they whore themselves out to get the ratings.

I used to think of Discovery, The Learning Channel, and National Geographic as educational - but that ceased a number of years ago, when they realized there was no money to be made from well-researched intelligent programming. On the few occasions they run anything fact-based, it usually consists of 15 minutes of actual information transformed into two hours of commercials and endless repetition of the content, all with an overly dramatic voice over. I actually think Michael Jackson's autopsy would fit quite well with the rest of their output.

I dunno, after watching some vintage Lawrence Welk last night (featuring 60-year-olds dressed up as Mousketeers), the idea of watching a fake Michael Jackson autopsy doesn't sound so awful.

OUCH. I now need brain bleach to get rid of THAT particular image.
