An Emmy Clean Sweep!

I just looked through the list of Emmy winners from last night and confirmed my suspicion: Glee, Mad Men, Modern Family, Nurse Jackie and all the others... I haven't seen any of them!

I really don't think I'm missing much though.

Actually, I think "Glee" and "Modern Family" are two of the best series to come along in a decade. I'm a big fan of entertainment that is clever, funny, musical (in the case of "Glee") and includes gay characters that ring true. I haven't seen "Mad Men" or "Nurse Jackie" yet.

i also haven't seen modern family, but i very much enjoy the other three:

glee - every bit like a brodway musical, in which folks burst into song at the drop of a hat; occasionally witty, often satirical, too often self-referential; it mostly brings a little joy back to television.

mad men - a darker-than-not look at the remaking of america. several characters are in deep transition, and watching their journeys parallel that of the nation is truly fascinating (the female character whose change is going to be the most profound is a year older than my mother was at the time, and i've actually come to understand some things about my mother by seeing these shifts in context).

nurse jackie - also dark, but full of honest humanity. despite what showtime and the emmys say, nurse jackie isn't a comedy; it is a family/workplace drama with some supremely funny moments. edie falco and anna deavere smith are well worth the cost of showtime.

i don't know how much television you actually watch, but these three shows are emphatic reasons (along with breaking bad and the united states of tara) to watch television.

I think "The Good Wife" is worth watching, and the once-again-snubbed "Friday Night Lights" is one of the best shows on television.

My S.O. behrndahl is an RN. He doesn't find much of anything on TV interesting, but he says that Nurse Jackie is the first show he's ever seen that gets the nursing business exactly right. From my POV it's a beautifully written hybrid of comedy and drama... in a single episode it might range from dark to hilarious (much like life).

I highly suggest Mad Men, for the cinematography alone. However, you should stay for the excellent acting, costume design, and plot developments. It is however, an arc-drama, so you'll want to start with Season 1.

Glee I enjoy, but I never catch it when it's on. They have the full episodes online, and I just fast forward to the songs. There is also a huge story arc, but it's not crucial to my enjoyment.

I haven't seen the others, as I don't have Showtime, and I can't stand the ad-cycles of broadcast networks.

Love Glee, and Madmen. Glee for the camp Broadway numbers, and Madmen for the delectable Jon Hamm. The directors are sensible enough to ensure he has his shirt off at some point in most episodes. Me, shallow? Say it isn't so!

Bill loves Modern Family, but I just didn't get in to it.

Glee is pretty intolerable, but Mad Men is amazing, and quite possibly the only one of those shows that deserves an Emmy.
