Iced In

Iced In!

When I stepped outside I found my car encased in snow with a glaze of ice. It looked like someone was trying to make a plaster cast of my Honda Civic. Digging it out was relatively easy as one good smash on each panel caused it all to loosen, lift and slide off en masse.

The next problem was insurmountable, however. The streets leading out of our neighbourhood aren't yet salted or sanded and there is a gradual upwards grading to the streets. My little car and I got 30 feet along the street then came to a complete halt. I wasn't sliding backwards but I couldn't go forward either.

Not wanting to lose what little vehicular control I had by doing anything dramatic, I put the car into reverse and gently guided it to the curb, turned it off and walked back to the house. The main roads and streets may be better than my immediate neighbourhood but there is nothing so important that I need to take any risk whatsoever.

[livejournal.com profile] cuyahogarvr and I just spent the last hour or so digging out the sidewalks, driveway and walkway of our house and our elderly neighbours, Isaac & Goldie. It wasn't fun but it was a good workout.

More freezing rain is in the forecast. *sigh*

Exactly my problem - getting out of the neighborhood onto the secondary streets. Fortunately (or unfortunately???) there was no hill for me to climb, so I just went very slowly until I got to wet or slushy pavement. After that, it was fine.

By the way, you may have heard this already, but your ex-employer is continuing to have layoffs. A friend of mine worked there since 1991 and just got laid off last Friday.

Layoffs

Yeah, I've been in touch with a number of folks, both laid off and survivors. It's not pretty.

Hearing all the snow n' ice that's plaguing many areas of the country, it makes me so glad I live out here where it's mostly in the 40's and not snowing or icing anywhere at the moment. :-)

Yeah, I hear/read/see the news in fits and starts and I keep seeing doom and gloom headlines of more layoffs everywhere.

Freezing rain: another argument against "intelligent design".

Stay safe!

I just finished my walk and driveway - I feel your pain!

Now a quick lunch and then off to Homo Despot for some more ice melt.

No, it's not from today.

You got freezing rain and we got over a foot of snow. I have but one question:

Isn't it spring and camping season yet?
