Adding to the Shopping List...

My home office also needs a vastly larger LCD monitor. My largest is only 14" or so... life would be much easier if I could have multiple windows open side-by-side.

In this regard, getting the 24" iMac was the worst decision I ever made... because now I'll never get used to anything smaller.

Yeah, woe is you. :-)

No, seriously. My next Mac really needs to be a Pro (it's what I've needed all along, but I simply couldn't afford it), and a 24" monitor for that puppy ain't gonna be cheap.

Both Costco and Dell have very good pricing on large flat screen monitors at the moment.

Size queens...

While I don't usually shop there: Samsung deals at Best Buy...

14"?? seriously?

DAYUM. The screen on my *laptop* is bigger than that!

Yeah, don't get anything that has less than a 1920x1280 resolution. (22-26")

What is this? Still dinking around with an itty bitty 14 incher? Where have you been? I've been using a 17" LCD since 2004... ;-)

[identity profile] theoctothorpe.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It may be, depending on what you want out of the monitor...

If you only want resolution, and don't care about colour fidelity all that much, you can get 23" for about $500 (1920x1280).

If you really need in IPS panel for good colour reproduction, and an LED backlight, that will be expensive.

I don't claim to know how good the colour fidelity on the iMac's screen is, but it's pretty and I like it. :)

As I recall, the iMac screens are *not* IPS screens, but the 22 and 30" displays are (but not the 20"). I could be wrong. They may have changed it when they made the iMacs aluminium (current model).

Mine's a 24" model from two years ago. I remember there was some kind of stink at the time about claims of false advertising when Apple claimed "millions of colours" when one of the smaller models wasn't actually capable of it.

If you're just looking for the ability to have two documents side-by-side, Lenovo sells a fairly inexpensive wide aspect 19" 1440 x 900 LCD, model L197 for $239.00 list. I use mine mostly for AutoCAD so I can't really comment on the color fidelity. You can frequently find this monitor and it's predecessors (L193, L194) on sale; the Lenovo Outlet has new L194's for $175.00 this week.

14"? What are you, a size queen? :)

Seriously, dude, upgrade. There are a lot of cheap options. I got a 17" wide screen monitor for $100 at TigetDirect over Christmas as I was upgrading my Windows PC weather station. I'm sure you can find something that fits within your budget.
