News from my Former Employer

For the past, oh, 12 years of employment in the US, I've maintained extensive work logs to record everything I've ever done on behalf of a client. Initially, it was to cover my butt if anyone should ever question an invoice when I was a contractor, but in recent years it was simply a good way of (a) remembering solutions for rarely-seen problems and (b) assembling the regularly required year-end performance self-evaluation documentation. I may not be the most exceptional staffer in the firm but half the battle for a superior evaluation is simply documenting what one has done.

When I left the firm a week ago, the crew gave me two empy logbooks as a gag gift. Yesterday, one of them sent this photo from my now-abandoned cube:

When I left my last job my staff gave me the data dictionary/program log I had used for almost 10 years with my big letters "PHIL'S DESK-HANDS OFF" all over it. The whole company signed it with best wishes and goodbyes. I loved it. It's great when your co-workers think enough of you to do something like that :)

I guess we never know what legacy we're leaving behind until we leave.
